VIDEO! Prairie burn at Winnemac Park

Neighbor Amy Williamson describes  the prairie burn at Winnemac park last week:

Photo, Eric Rojas
This morning, 12/6, landscape crews in Winnemac Park cut and rake prairie plants away from wooden fences in preparation for an upcoming controlled prairie burn. It is important for prairies to be burned periodically to kill off invasive plants, release nutrients into the soil and to germinate certain types of seeds. Established prairie plants have long roots and are not harmed by the fires.

Jorndt Stadium to close at 3 PM until Spring 2013

Just saw this sign posted at Jorndt Field.  It will be now be open M-F 8 am - 3 pm.

Photo, Scott Bloom
If you have questions about why cuts were made and would like to see the hours restored, please call the Chicago Board of Education at (773) 553-1600.  This neighbor (Eric Rojas) has personally been scooted off the track at 3PM this week! The cuts may make good sense, but it's a blow to evening runners.

Info about Jorndt Field (from Wikipedia)

The sports stadium was renovated in 2004 and renamed Jorndt Field after Louis C. Jorndt. Lou Jorndt taught and coached at Amundsen from 1930 until 1953. His son Dan Jorndt, and his wife Pat Jorndt donated $1 million for the renovation. Football scenes for the movie The Express (2008), about the life of Ernie Davis, the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy, were filmed in Jorndt Field in April and May 2007.

News Video! Recess at Chappell Elementary and CPS

Medill News from Northwestern University featured Chappell Elementary School for their story on the new required recess at Chicago Public Schools. Our Kindergarten son loves the recess and comes home talking about new games he has learned.  Our PRE-K daughter can't wait to move-up!

WATCH the Medill News VIDEO HERE

What's really cool about the recess program with Playworks is many higher grade students help as "leaders".  Older kids around the school (and neighborhood) are always saying hello, waving to our kindergarten son because they interact with him as leaders. It's neat to see the kids supportive and welcoming across the grade levels!  The recess, lunch-time and other activity student-helpers at Chappell foster this excellent atmosphere.

Art Opening at Dole Casa Cafe: Roots of the Community

Please join us to celebrate Roots of our Community: Honoring older artists in and around the 47th Ward

Opening Reception:
Thursday, November 8th, 7-9 pm. at Dolce Casa Cafe - 4947 N Damen, Chicago

We are delighted to invite our local neighbors to join us as we celebrate art for all ages. We'll also unveil a mosaic created by the Chicago Mosaic School together with older adults of the 47th Ward.

A little history:
The 47th Ward Senior Council was approached by the Chicago Mosaic School with an interest in creating a mosaic to honor the contributions of older adults in and around the 47th Ward. The Senior Council invited older volunteers to help make the mosaic, which will be hung at a number of locations around the Ward with the idea of honoring our older residents and promoting the idea that art is a lifelong endeavor.

Together with the Senior Artists Network, we worked to create a show where local older artists could hang their art (it is for sale as well!) and the Mosaic will be unveiled. It is an excellent collaboration of The Chicago Mosaic School, The Senior Artists Network, The 47th Ward Senior Council, and Forward Chicago. We are so pleased to partner with Dolce Casa Cafe to host this excellent event.

We will have an opening on Thursday, November 8th. Please come and join your neighbors at this local event celebrating art, community, and aging. If you cannot make it, please do stop by and see the art that will hang for the month of November.

Help Amundsen win a Driver's Education grant by voting online

Please read the following appeal from Amundsen PE/Driver's Ed teachers, Mr. Harlston and Mr. Binder:

We need your help. We have entered Amundsen in the State Farm Insurance "CelebrateMyDrive" campaign. The winning school receives a $100,000 grant to use at their discretion. As of last Friday there were only 11 other schools signed up. So, our chances for winning are better than the lottery!

We'd like to use the grant to update Room 107 and purchase new cars for the after school range program which currently has cars from 1997. (Gas was much less expensive then!)

We need to get the word out to get votes and Amundsen wins! Anyone and everyone can vote! We need you, your students, friends, family, neighbors and Facebook friends! Please spread the word to everyone and bring the $100,000 back to Amundsen High School.

Voting is from September 10 - 15 (Monday - Saturday). To vote, go to: www.celebratemydrive.com and follow the prompts.

Please help us take up this great cause by voting daily and spread the word to as many people as you can.

Thanks so much for your help!
